Investing in Culture: The Financial Appeal of Art, Watches, and Memorabilia

What do a Monet painting, a pair of Nike shoes, and a Birkin bag have in common? They are all part of a growing category of alternative investments called collectibles. Owning something beautiful, symbolic, or vintage can be enjoyed in the moment and yield returns in the future. This class of investment is unique and has so many options there is definitely something that appeals to everyone. Owning fine art, rare coins, or sports memorabilia serves both the investor who loves their collection and also their portfolio, which can see benefits like diversification, a hedge against inflation, and long-term appreciation of the assets.

Tangible assets can provide greater investment security during times of economic uncertainty. This is at least one reason people gravitated toward collectibles during the COVID-19 pandemic. The rise of social media influencers and celebrities sharing their collections of couture, shoes, watches, and handbags caused the public to become more interested in starting their own collections. Luxury goods and creating collections that reflect a person’s interests and style resonated with many, and sales of collectibles soared. The demand for memorabilia, luxury or vintage items, and rare coins or stamps rose an astonishing amount and now the market valuation of collectibles is around $450 billion!

Scarcity and prestige drive value, and nowhere is that more clear than in the world of fine art. Having a Banksy or Picasso is a status symbol only available to the ultra-wealthy; these works of art make wonderful investments if you can afford them. Historically, art appreciates over time, especially after the passing of the artist, when demand is higher than the finite supply of works. To solve the problem of fine art being inaccessible to most, innovative platforms have risen to meet the interest in fine art collectibles. They allow fractional ownership of major works that are sold once they have appreciated sufficiently. Those platforms and art funds have created a way for average investors to get a slice of the collectible pie. As with anything, there are risks and challenges that need to be balanced with the benefits when choosing what to invest in.

Make sure to take the following into account:

  • Authenticity risks: Counterfeits can undermine value.
  • Illiquidity: Difficult to sell quickly compared to traditional assets.
  • Market volatility: Subject to trends, cultural shifts, and economic conditions.
  • Storage & maintenance costs: Proper care is essential to preserve value.

The latest generations are entering the market with inherited wealth and some disposable income as they rise in their careers. As their interests and the availability of money align, they will continue to invest more in the collectibles they love. Millennials and Gen Z have deep interests in nostalgia and pop culture collections. Trading cards, contemporary art, sneakers, and rare records all hold meaning for them. These generations, in an effort to democratize access to these collections, have created platforms that make buying and selling these items easier and fractional shares of collectibles and works of art possible. TikTok and Instagram have been used not only as places to showcase these collectibles but also as a marketing tool for auctions and sales.

As this class of alternative investments grows and technology rises to meet the demand, investing in collectibles will become more mainstream. Having a diverse portfolio is essential and maybe collectibles should become a part of your long-term financial strategy. Do your due diligence to make sensible choices for your portfolio and try not to get caught up in the emotional excitement of owning the vintage sneakers you always wanted.
